20% Fees Cut in Private School – Calcutta High Court Orders

20% Fees Cut in Private School – The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday proposed a minimum 20 per cent reduction in fees to 145 private schools here. The court directed that non-essential charges for non-use of facilities would not apply. Parents of students from 145 schools in and around the city had said in the petition that only online classes were being conducted during the COVID-19 epidemic shutdown, thus reducing school fees.

While directing that there would be no increase in fees during the financial year 2020-21, the court ordered that from April 2020 on the day the schools reopened, all 145 schools would be reduced by a minimum of 20 per cent.

A division bench of Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Moushumi Bhattacharya directed that non-essential fees for labs, crafts, sports facilities or additional activities or use of such facilities, which have not been availed, would not be admissible during those months. The months in which there have been no classes in schools.

The minimum figure of 20 per cent reduction in monthly tuition fees will be based on the tuition fees taken for the same month in the previous financial year. The court made it clear that there would be no refund of the fees already paid.
